How to Make the Most of Your 10-Minute GP Appointment

The 10-Minute Challenge

The average GP consultation in the UK lasts just 10 minutes. That's not much time to explain your symptoms, ask questions, and understand your treatment plan. Preparation is key.

Before Your Appointment

1. Write Down Your Symptoms

  • When did they start?
  • How often do they occur?
  • What makes them better or worse?
  • How severe are they (1-10)?

Use Patient Ally's consultation tool to create a structured symptom report you can bring with you.

2. List Your Medications

Include everything:

  • Prescription medications
  • Over-the-counter medicines
  • Supplements and vitamins
  • Herbal remedies

3. Prepare Your Questions

Write down the 2-3 most important questions you want answered. Common ones:

  • What do you think is causing this?
  • What tests might I need?
  • What are my treatment options?
  • When should I come back if it doesn't improve?

4. Bring a Support Person

If you're anxious or dealing with complex issues, bring someone who can:

  • Help you remember what the GP says
  • Ask questions you might forget
  • Provide emotional support

During Your Appointment

Lead with the Most Important Issue

Start with your main concern. If you have multiple issues, tell the GP upfront: "I have three things I'd like to discuss, but the most important is..."

Be Honest and Specific

  • Don't minimise symptoms
  • Mention lifestyle factors (alcohol, smoking, stress)
  • Share any concerns, even if they seem embarrassing

Take Notes

Write down:

  • The diagnosis or suspected diagnosis
  • Any tests being ordered
  • Medications prescribed
  • Follow-up instructions

After Your Appointment

  • Use Patient Ally's Health Journal to track how your symptoms change
  • Follow up if symptoms don't improve within the timeframe your GP suggested
  • Get test results — don't assume no news is good news
